How to file for a DNA test?
To perform a DNA test for immigration purposes, wait to receive a formal request from USCIS, a U.S. embassy, U.S. consulate, or Passport Agency. These agencies issue the request when your initial documentation submitted with an immigrant visa application or Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) application does not sufficiently prove a biological relationship.
The request may suggest you to provide secondary evidence through voluntary DNA testing.
How does citizenship DNA Testing process work?
This overview explains the DNA testing process for immigrant families, including both domestic and international cases.
Domestic Cases (All Parties Located in the United States)
- The petitioner receives a Request for Evidence (RFE) or a recommendation letter from an embassy or consulate, instructing both the petitioner and beneficiary to complete DNA testing to confirm the claimed relationship.
- Contact our office at 646-343-9778 to schedule appointments for both the petitioner and beneficiary. Our partner, an AABB-accredited testing laboratory, will manage case initiation and sample collection.
- After collecting all DNA samples, the laboratory will conduct testing and analysis.
- Upon completion, the laboratory will mail an official copy of the results to the requesting immigration agency, mail a copy to your home, and email an additional copy to you.
International Cases (Petitioner in the U.S., Beneficiary Abroad)
- The petitioner receives a Request for Evidence (RFE) or a recommendation letter from an embassy or consulate, instructing both the petitioner and beneficiary to complete DNA relationship testing to confirm the claimed biological relationship.
- Contact our office at 646-343-9778 to schedule an appointment for the petitioner. Our partner, an AABB-accredited DNA testing laboratory, will manage case initiation and sample collection.
- After collecting the petitioner’s sample, the laboratory will send a formal request to the U.S. Embassy or Consulate responsible for the beneficiary, coordinating the beneficiary’s DNA sample collection abroad.
- Once the beneficiary’s sample is collected, it will be shipped to the laboratory for comparative analysis.
- After the laboratory completes the analysis, an official copy of the results will be sent to the requesting immigration agency, mailed to your home, and emailed to you.
